Azure Database Migration Service

The latest update to the public preview of Azure Database Migration Service includes support for on-premises migrations from SQL Server to Azure SQL Database Managed Instance.

Azure Database Migration Service reduces the complexity of cloud migrations via the use of a single, comprehensive service. The service supports migrations of homogeneous/heterogeneous source-target pairs. The guided migration process is easy to understand and implement.

Java support for App Service on Linux

Microsoft Azure announced more language runtime support for built-in images. You can now create a Linux web app by using Tomcat 8.5 or 9.0, with JRE 8 as a runtime stack.

Name changes: Virtual Machines B-series US Gov

Create scalable and reliable apps and APIs—that are inexpensive to operate—with Azure Cloud Services. Focus on your apps and not maintaining hardware. Deploy apps by using any language you like, including Java, Node.js, PHP, Python, .NET, or Ruby.

Azure Virtual Machines B-series naming will change on May 1, 2018, in all Azure Government regions. The letters “VM” will be removed from all Cloud Services B-series names. Azure is making this change to standardize names across all VM types. There won’t be a pricing impact from this change, but you might need to modify billing routines that rely on the new names.

Major version updates for App Service on Linux

Azure team have just released new Node and PHP versions for Azure App Service on Linux.

For Node, following major versions have been added:

  • 4
  • 9
  • 8
  • 2

For PHP,

  • 2

Update for Azure IoT Edge

The update for Azure IoT Edge includes improvements to the runtime:

  • Python: Azure IoT Edge modules can now be written in Python through the clientand service
  • Edge CLI: The Azure IoT extensionfor Azure CLI now allows programmatic management of IoT Edge solutions in addition to the existing Azure portal experience.
  • Protocol choice: Users can now configure the runtime to use AMQP or AMQP over WebSockets for communication with Azure IoT Hub.

The Azure IoT Edge extension for VS Code has been updated to:

  • Create, update, and delete IoT Edge devices and modules.
  • View module twins
